You probably know May 1 as “May Day” or perhaps “International Workers Day.” But in the United States May 1 is, by public law, “Loyalty Day.” It is a day for, according to the text of the law,
[T]he reaffirmation of loyalty to the United States and for the recognition of the heritage of American freedom.
The law requests that the president issue a proclamation calling on government officials to display the flag on all government buildings, and invites the public to take part in celebrations “in schools and other suitable places.”
The recognition of Loyalty Day began under President Eisenhower. And, like President Obama and other presidents before him, Donald Trump issued a Loyalty Day proclamation, which reads in part:
On Loyalty Day we recognize and reaffirm our allegiance to the principles on which our nation was built. We pledge our dedication to the United States Of America and honor its unique heritage , reminding ourselves that we are one nation, under God, made possible by those who have sacrificed to defend our liberty. We honor our Republic and acknowledge the great responsibility that self-governance demands of each of us.
The United States stands as the world’s leader in upholding the ideals of freedom, equality, and justice. Together, and with these fundamental concepts enshrined in our Constitution, our Nation perseveres in the face of those who would seek to harm it.
From the reaction on the right, you would think that Trump invented this holiday and that it is the best idea that any American president has ever come up with. From the right-wing Sparta Report:
FEARLESS: PRESIDENT TRUMP MAKES IT OFFICIAL – MAY 1ST IS LOYALTY DAY
The President is unmoved by the communists and socialist and other social justice warriors who are set to rally around the world this May 1st by the thousands.
In this proclamation, he aims to reaffirm his loyalty to the American people and asks that they recognize the principles on which America is built as one Nation, under God.
Fox News also left readers with the impression that Loyalty Day is a Trump thing with this headline, filed in the section “Proud American”:
Trump proclaims May 1 as ‘Loyalty Day’
Their piece makes no mention of the history of the holiday or the fact that it comes from a 1950s anti-communist era law.
But not so long ago, when President Obama issued his Loyalty Day proclamations, reaction on the right was somewhat different.
And what did Fox News have to say about Obama’s Loyalty Day proclamation? Bupkis.
The right now wants every knee to bend, every head to bow, every tongue to be still in deference to Loyalty Day and the great love the new God-Emperor is showing for his country and his people.
And just a year ago, this was something else they were blaming on the black guy.
