Donald Trump is clearly running out of attack lines when it comes to his opponent. At a rally on Friday, the GOP nominee decided to try to use Michelle Obama as a weapon against Hillary Clinton.
Speaking at a rally in Fletcher, North Carolina, Trump dug up Michelle Obama’s 2007 remark that you can’t possibly handle running the country if you can’t manage to run your own home and claimed the statement was directed at Hillary Clinton. He then slammed the first lady for now supporting Clinton.
‘We have a president, all he wants to do is campaign. His wife, all she wants to do is campaign. And I see how much his wife likes Hillary,’ Trump said. ‘But wasn’t she the one that originally started the statement, if you can’t take care of your home — right? — you can’t take care of the White House or the country.’
‘Where is that? I don’t hear that. I don’t hear that. She’s the one that started that. I said, “We can’t say that, it’s too vicious.” Can you believe it? I said that,’ he continued. ‘They said, well Michelle Obama said it. I said she did? Now she said that, but we don’t hear about that.’
The comment Trump is referring to is this quote from Michelle, which was said in August of 2007:
“If you can’t run your own house, you can’t run the White House.”
When the upstanding folks at the Drudge Report got ahold of this line they ran with it, claiming the remark was clearly aimed at Hillary Clinton. However, the Obamas have denied repeatedly that this was ever intended to be a dig at the Clintons in any way.
“There was no reference beyond her point that we have had an administration that talks a lot about family values but doesn’t follow through,” Obama said at the time.
Later in that same month Michelle Obama elaborated on the quote, giving more insight into the context of her remark.
“So our view was that, if you can’t run your own house, you certainly can’t run the White House. So, so we’ve adjusted our schedules to make sure that our girls are first, so while he’s traveling around, I do day trips,” she said.
Trump clearly has nothing even remotely legitimate left to throw at Hillary, and that’s just pathetic — especially for a man who claims to be “the best” at…well, everything.
