Before the Giant Orange Traffic Cone was elected leader of the free world, we would have normally mocked Republicans for their attack on women’s rights, but we would have been fairly certain their offensive legislation would surely die before ever landing on the desk of the president. And, for eight years we’ve had the comfort of knowing even if the loons passed a bill that would leave millions of women without the healthcare choices protected by the United States Constitution, a veto would swiftly block the conservatives gropey little hands.
Now, the little hand, with tiny, little fingers, of a man who once entertained the idea of his mistress choosing an abortion, will hold the pen that could sign away the rights of millions of women.

Congressman Steve King of Iowa has introduced a “heartbeat” bill that is said to be very similar the failed Ohio bill. The only difference with this is that it would be a federal law, and with a Republican controlled legislature, this one really could land on the desk of the Tangerine Tyrant.
A Press Release issued by King’s office states:
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Steve King released the following statement after introducing “The Heartbeat Bill,” that would require physicians to detect the heartbeat and prohibit the abortion of a baby with a beating heart:
“Since Roe v. Wade was unconstitutionally decided in 1973, nearly 60 million innocent babies’ lives have been ended by the abortion industry, all with a rubber stamp by the federal government,” said King. “Human life, beginning at the moment of conception, is sacred in all of its forms and today, I introduced a bill that will protect the lives of voiceless innocents.
My legislation will require all physicians, before conducting an abortion, to detect the heartbeat of the unborn child. If a heartbeat is detected, the baby is protected.
America was founded on the concept that our rights come from God. All human persons have a right to life. How then could we confer that those rights allow the killing of a baby? I believe our most important responsibility that God has bestowed upon us is to protect innocent human life, and I will continue to dedicate my life to that responsibility.”
Unfortunately, these right-wing “protect innocent human life” congressmen and their anti-choice supporters couldn’t care less if those “innocent lives” go without basic healthcare, housing, nourishment, or education. Little baby Billy or Sally must be born, their mothers couldn’t possibly make healthcare decisions regarding their own reproduction. However, when little Billy or Sally’s mom needs assistance to feed the children she was forced to bear – well – that protection of life changes greatly.
Sorry, Billy and Sally, starvation is far superior to abortion. While your bellies rumble, don’t forget to thank the brave congressmen who protected your right to life.
