November 8th, 2106 is one of those unforgettable dates for most liberals. Like the day Kennedy was assassinated or the morning we all watched, sick to our stomachs, as planes ripped through the Twin Towers, the feeling we had when we realized this is not a test, not an elaborate prank, and not a waking nightmare is one we won’t ever be able to shake completely.
Although we reacted in vastly different ways, as humans do, the core emotions remained the same. Some of us cried, some of us tried to protect ourselves with a tenuous veil of denial and others got angry and took to the streets. We’re still collectively trying to get a grip on what’s happening, but between Trump’s despicable cabinet choices and the Republican vultures who are already picking the meat from the bones of Obama’s achievements, we do now understand that this is not a bad dream…this is real.
But even if we can’t defeat Trump right this very second, there is still a lot of good that we can contribute to the world.
An amazing friend, colleague and liberal warrior of ours here at GOPocalypse has recently gone through an unbelievably horrific time with his wife, Nicole — and he has not left her side for a minute during their nightmarish ordeal. His name is Salvatore Aversa and this is his story:
I recall writing stories about single-payer healthcare and seeing so many people asking for help to pay their medical bills. Now I find myself in the predicament of being on the other end of the story.
We have health insurance. Unfortunately, our out-of-pocket maximum is an obscene $13,000. Nicole is going to need at least a month’s worth of 24-hour a day IV antibiotics. Each bag lasts one day and is $200. On top of that, we have to pay $200 a visit for the in-home nurse. Since this is considered a prescription, it is counted differently.
This is on top of the $2600 for her initial surgery that took place last year, and her lost wages from not being able to go back to work.
It’s quite humbling experience, having to ask for help. We did everything right. We have health insurance. We take care of ourselves. All it took, however, was a complication for a routine surgery to send us into a tailspin.
It reaffirms everything my wife and I believe. It’s a crime to live in one of the richest countries in the world and not have single-payer healthcare. A medical emergency should not bankrupt somebody. In any other developed country, this would not be an issue. But America has the best healthcare money can buy.
I thank you for reading our story. If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing.
Let’s stick together and remember what it really means to be a liberal. We might not be able to stop Trump or fix everything that is broken today, but we can make a difference in each other’s lives — whether it’s a smile, a hug, comforting words or a few bucks we really won’t miss anyway.

Because President-elect Trump and his eager band of dangerous fools in Washington are a reality now, but we REFUSE to ever normalize any of it.
