When Antonin Scalia died in February, the Republican Party immediately began plans to circumvent the Constitution in order to obstruction President Obama’s right to fill the vacancy he left on the Supreme Court — and for months they have done just that. Senate Repubs have said that they do not believe Obama has the “right” to fill the spot in the court because the “people” should have a say in it.
According to them, the only way for this to happen is if the next president appoints a justice to the court because, apparently, the people voting for Obama twice are not making it clear enough that we wanted him to speak for us…but whatevs. For months, the GOP has repeated this bullshit talking point as they crippled the Supreme Court, but now Senator John McCain (R-AZ) has blown that line out of the water and exposed the party for the treacherous leeches they really are.
During an interview on Monday with a Philadelphia radio host McCain said the party has every intention of shitting all over the Constitution for years to come:
I promise you that we will be united against any Supreme Court nominee that Hillary Clinton, if she were president, would put up.
The senator went on to say,“I promise you that we will be united against any Supreme Court nominee that Hillary Clinton, if she were president, would put up,” McCain told Giordano. He added that “this is why we need the majority.
When word broke that McCain has made such a vile promise, his campaign immediately released a statement “ensuring” the American people that he doesn’t plan to break his vow to uphold the Constitution:
‘Senator McCain believes you can only judge people by their record and Hillary Clinton has a clear record of supporting liberal judicial nominees,’ communications director Rachael Dean told Talking Points Memo in a statement. ‘That being said, Senator McCain will, of course, thoroughly examine the record of any Supreme Court nominee put before the Senate and vote for or against that individual based on their qualifications as he has done throughout his career.’
This is a very dangerous game the Republican Party is playing with our government. McCain is essentially saying that the GOP does not believe that any democratically elected president has the right to fill the SCOTUS, unless they are a right-wing president. This party, the one that claims to believe in the Constitution, is going to completely ignore it in order to play partisan politics. This also means that if they succeeded, our Supreme Court — the one that is supposed to be above political drama — will be poisoned for decades to come essentially destroying our democracy.
For this reason, we must ensure that the GOP not only loses any chance at the White House but we take control of the Senate, too.
