In the wee hours of the morning, Michael Moore posted a message for to the rest of the world explaining our archaic system of selecting the leader of the free world. He provided historic context surrounding why the electoral college exists, as well as his desire to find some legal measure that will prevent Trump from taking office in January. A desire that is likely futile at this point, but good on him for at least continuing to try to fight what will likely be considered the worst mistake in American history.
People from around the world responded to Moore’s post with messages about their feelings of fear, hopelessness, and disappointment in what our country has done.
While the Trump-loving conservatives cling to nationalism, they fail to use any care about how our actions impact the global community. We currently maintain over 800 military bases in more than 70 countries/territories around the world. Our economy is tied to the global economy. What happens in our “super power” country has enormous impact, and we’ve now made a move that threatens everyone in the world.
Yes, they are scared, and not just for us, for themselves and everyone else who lives on this planet.
ACLU President Susan H. Herman wrote an article for Huffington Post in which she outlines possible changes for the Electoral College. She fully admits that with the current climate of Republican-domination in rural states, a full on abandonment of the Electoral College is simply not possible. However, she does provide us with an option: The National Popular Vote Act (NPVA).
Under the NPVA plan, states enact a law requiring their electors to vote for the winner of the national popular vote (rather than the state’s own popular vote). The act becomes effective only after states with electoral votes totaling at least 270 have passed the legislation. Eleven states (CA, D.C., HI, IL, MA, MD, NJ, NY, RI, VT, WA) with a total of 165 electoral votes have already passed the NPVA. If states with electoral votes totaling 105 more votes pass the act, the winner of the next presidential election will be selected by popular choice.
While increasing the states who pass the NPVA doesn’t negate the results of the 2016 election, and we all are going to have to deal with the misery and pain caused by horrible man we will have in the White House come January, we might be able to do something to make sure this never happens again – should we survive Donald Trump’s presidency.
