On Tuesday morning President Obama held a news conference with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi. Of course one of the topics that came up was Donald Trump and his continuing claim that the upcoming election is being “rigged” to keep him from winning. The president pulled exactly zero punches in one of the most beautiful smackdowns of Trump yet.
Obama points out that confidence in our elections is part of what makes our democracy strong, and notes that the loser always congratulates the winner “and we move forward.” He follows that with an observation that he has never in his lifetime seen someone running for president who is “trying to discredit the elections and the election process before votes have even taken place.”
After some observations about how patently absurd the charge of a rigged election is, the president hits Trump with this:
I would invite Mr. Trump to stop whining and go make his case to get votes.
