The continuing saga of Donald Trump’s relationship with Russia added another chapter on Wednesday evening with the revelation that Attorney General Jefferson Beauregard Sessions met twice with the Russian ambassador last year. On Thursday morning Sessions said he would recuse himself “if necessary” from any investigation of Trump’s ties to Russia after even some Republicans began to call for it.
But before Sessions made his announcement, one of his bosom buddies in the Senate, Ted Cruz, went on MSNBC’s Morning Joe to defend him.
Just a year ago Cruz wanted to “spank” Hillary Clinton for allegedly lying about Benghazi. But now he’s fine with Sessions saying under oath that he “did not have communications with the Russians” while, as we now know, yes, in fact he did. Cruz’s take on the current situation is that it is “political theater” and a “nothing burger.”
